With the start of the New Year comes new beginnings, new ventures, resolutions, creating new habits and the want to achieve goals, targets and dreams.
Some of these goals will be small, simple things. But some may be huge goals, bucket list stuff, life long ambitions. How exciting!!
Setting and staying on track with your goals so that you actually achieve them takes consistency and focus.
Much of my work in my business is removing and changing negative thoughts and behaviours, however another part of my work is helping others to achieve their goals whether it be personal or professional. This is a passion of mine and I have had great success over the years.
If there is something you have always wanted to do, have, or be, then there is no better time than now to start to work towards achieving it. I mean do you really want to be old and grey and full of regret for not dedicating some time making these dreams real?
So, I thought it would be useful to give you a simple step by step guide that you can easily follow and keep you on track to successfully achieve your goals or tick off your bucket list.
How to set your goals:
- Know specifically what you want:
Knowing specifics of what you want is key to achieving your goal. For example, if your goal is to loose weight, specifically how much weight do want to loose? Or if your goal is to be happy, what specific things do you need or want that will make you happy? In our day to day thinking, only 3% of our thoughts are conscious. Our unconscious mind controls the rest. Our unconscious mind needs clear orders and specific details to enable it to work effectively. Giving our unconscious mind clear and detailed instructions will help it to know what you want. When you know exactly what you want it’s much easier to go out and get it! Be a detailed and specific as possible.
- Give your goal a timeframe:
Make sure you give yourself a timeframe in which you want to achieve your goal. And again, be specific. If you want to achieve your goal within 6 months, what day and date does that take you to from now? You can even drill it down to morning evening or an actual time. For example, Friday 18thFebruary 2022 at 10am.
- Use your senses:
When thinking about achieving your goal think about what you will see, hear, feel, taste and touch. When you achieve it where are you? If you are in your house, what room are you in? What are you wearing? How do you feel? What sounds do you hear? What emotions come up for you? All of this is so important to helping your unconscious get you want you desire. Make it as real as possible.
- State your goal in positive terms:
Make sure you are stating what you want. NOT what you don’t want. For example; “I am a size 12” NOT “I don’t want to be a size 18” By ensuring the language you use is positive is a great way to help with a positive mindset too. Use positive words as much as possible.
- Write or type your goal like you have already achieved it:
Studies over the years have proved that when you write or type your goal you are much more likely to achieve it than if it is just in your head. So get it down on paper or on your laptop or even the notes on your phone.
When you write your goal, imagine yourself having already achieved it. Use all the steps above when writing it out and imagine yourself in the future. For example
“It is 10am on Saturday 18th February 2022. I am standing outside my new home in Mexico and I feel amazing! I feel the sun on my face and I can hear the ocean in the distance.”
If this is something you really want then writing it as though you have already achieved it is so powerful!
- Take Action:
So, you have decided on a goal, took all the above steps and you are ready to go out and achieve it. The reason so many of us don’t stay on track with our goals is because we lose sight of them. We write them down and they sit in our diary or on our laptops doing nothing! Make sure you take action every day. If you really want it, you MUST take action.
Ask yourself every day;
What will I do today to achieve my goal?
What will I do tomorrow to achieve my goal?
So whether you are wanting to achieve something small or maybe it is a huge lifetime dream that you really want to become your reality, by following these steps you will be much more in control of achieving.
Just imagine how you will feel when you finally make reality of that dream you have had for years!
